Nigerians in India Cry Out Over Alleged Harassment, Visa Struggles
Concerns are growing among Nigerians living in India, as many speak up about what they describe as increasing harassment, strict visa conditions, and unfair treatment by authorities.
Some students and residents say things have become tougher in recent months, pointing to frequent police checks, high visa renewal fees, and what they believe is targeted scrutiny. For many, the issue isn’t just about paperwork, but rather the feeling constantly watched and unsettled.
The situation has now caught wider attention, with the National Association of Nigerian Students stepping in. The group recently protested in Abuja, urging the Nigerian government to urgently engage Indian authorities and address the complaints coming from students abroad.
From what affected individuals are saying, visa renewal is one of the biggest challenges. Some claim they are required to pay more frequently and at higher rates than other foreign nationals, making it difficult to keep up. Others allege that once visas expire, they risk being tracked, picked up by authorities, or deported.
There are also claims of discrimination in everyday life. A few Nigerians say they’ve been denied housing or had their businesses disrupted simply because of their nationality.
At the same time, not everyone sees the issue from one angle. Some insiders suggest that stricter enforcement may be linked to past cases involving a small number of Nigerians, especially around immigration violations and crime. Still, many argue that the majority should not be judged based on a few incidents.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission says it has not received formal complaints on the matter, adding that countries have the right to set their own visa rules. However, it noted that Nigeria can explore diplomatic options, including reciprocal policies.
Former diplomats are now calling for calm but also action, urging the government to open dialogue with India while advising Nigerians abroad to stay within the law.
